Splinters

Dogs and cats don't get splinters very often because their skin is protected pretty well by fur. But on the less hairy areas, such between the toes or on the lower legs, they can get thorns or splinters tuck into their skin. These are not particularly dangerous, but they can be very painful and can often cause infection unless treated with antibiotics.

Hunting dogs are especially prone to splinters. Because they run through woods and fields or swim in ponds and lakes, they can get jumbo-size splinter that look more like pieces of sticks. Dogs and sometimes cats can run into bushes and get sticks jammed into their chests, and hunting dogs often ram into underwater trees or fence posts while swimming.

It can be hard to tell from the outside how deeply a large splinter intrudes into the body, and some injuries can be life-threatening. Any time a dog or cat has a large splinter or stick fragment stuck deep in the chest or trunk, he needs medical attention as soon as possible. Small splinters in the feet and legs can usually be removed with first aid.

Trim the Fur

If your pet is very furry, you may need to clip the fur to get a clear view of the splinter. While you are clipping, be careful not to cut off the end of the splinter or push it in deeper.

Wash the Area

Wash the area with soap and water to get rid of any bacteria on the wound. You can use a mild antiseptic liquid soap. Be sure to rinse off the suds thoroughly.

Clean your Tweezers

Clean blunt-tipped metal tweezers by wiping them with rubbing alcohol, then placing them under running water. Wipe them dry with a gauze pad before you use them.

Remove the Splinter

Grab the end of the splinter firmly with the tweezers and pull it out in the direction that it entered the skin. You may need to carefully tease open the skin around the splinter first with a clean needle before trying to remove it.

Encourage the Wound to Bleed

Splinters are incredibly dirty and can carry infections debris into the skin. So if the wound bleeds a bit, that's good because it can flush debris out of the wound. You can gently press on both sides of the wound to prompt it to bleed a small amount.

Wash the Wound Again

Once the splinter has been removed, wash the sore area again.

If the splinter was in the foot or lower leg, it's a good idea to use warm water and Epsom salts to soak the area for 10 min at a time twice a day for 3 days. This will help the body eject any leftover debris and bacteria that may have been left behind in the wound.

Follow-Up Care

For wounds that aren't easy to soak with a foot bath, continue to use the hot, wet compresses for 2 days after the splinter is gone. The warmth increases blood circulation to the area to help speed healing.

Even when you're able to remove the splinter successfully at home, antibiotics are important to prevent infection from developing. An injection at the vet's office may be followed by a week's worth of pills, depending on the severity of the wound.

Stick-size splinters that have been removed can leave large wounds that you'll need to keep clean. Wash the area as needed with mild antiseptic liquid soap to help speed the healing and prevent infection from developing.
